Top-rated Sylvia Yang (1842) of Plano won the Texas Polgar Qualifier, 2-0. The three-player round-robin was held Saturday, May 17 at the Texas Neurosciences Institute. Local invitee Rheanna English (1721) came in second with 1-1, losing only to Yang. The youngest and lowest rated player, Rorye Jones (566) lost both her games but learned a lot. The top two finishers qualify to go to the the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls, to be held July 27-Aug. 1 in Lubbock, Texas.

Invitations went out to the section winners of the Texas Girls' Championship, where English won the high school title and Jones won in Kindergarten; and also to the top scoring girls at the Texas Scholastic Championships, where Yang tied in Middle School division with Victoria Zhang. Twelve girls in all were invited.

The top high school girl in Texas, Courtney Jamison (2073), was playing as a wild card entry in the US Women's Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma (May 13-21). Courtney received a special invitation for the Polgar National, so she did not miss out on qualifying.
