PSP Folder/File Structure Chart

First off this chart is mainly for the people that have kept up with the firmware updates. I'm not saying that people with older firmware versions can't use this chart also. It's just that older firmware versions might not be able to utilize all the folders/features that come with newer firmware releases.

Let me start off with saying that if you format your Memory Stick with your PSP that you will end up with MOST of the folders listed here. NOTE: If you decide to format your Memory Stick first make sure that you have saved ALL your important files to your computer.

Folders listed are:

DCIM NOTE: This folder does NOT appear on the MS by itself. Read below on how to add it.

DCIM/xxxMSDCF*

MP_ROOT

MP_ROOT/xxxANV01*

MP_ROOT/xxxMNV01*

MUSIC

OMGAUDIO NOTE: I did not list this folder above this time. The reason is due to the fact that only SonicStage can move usable files here.

DCIM

You’ve prolly wondered about this folder. This folder isn’t actually made by the PSP. This folder is created by a Sony digital camera. You know how when you open up the Photo option in the PSP menu and there is that one folder you could never find… The folder called Digital Camera Images… Well, this is that folder.

NOTE: You might not be wondering about this folder anymore if you've recently updated to 2.80. It seems Sony has removed the folder just being there for no reason. My guess is they figured by having it there it might entice more poeple to buy a Sony digital camera...

DCIM/xxxMSDCF*

In order to put pictures into the Digital Camera Images folder on the PSP you’ll need to make two folders. The first is right on the Memory Stick and its labeled DCIM. The second folder resides inside the DCIM folder and its labeled xxxMSDCF.

The pictures have to have specific names to be displayed. The JPEG images should be named DCSxxxxx.JPG for the PSP to recognize them. Just replace the “xxxxx” with any five numbers of your choice. Sony digital cameras take JPEG images, so make sure the pictures you put into this folder is in JPEG format.

MP_ROOT

This is the second usable folder located directly on your Memory Stick. In this folder you’ll find the two folders used to store your videos. The two folders used here are xxxANV01 and xxxMNV01.

MP_ROOT/xxxANV01*

Your converted AVC files will go in this folder. Your formatted video files will/should be labeled like MAQxxxxx.MP4. The “xxxxx” will be five numbers of yours or your converters choice.

NOTE: When formatted with the PSP the folder will show as 101ANV01. This will work for your AVC videos, but PSP Video 9 prefers to use the 100ANV01 folder I have listed here. PSP Video 9 will install the 100ANV01 folder for you if it is not present.

MP_ROOT/xxxMNV01*

Your converted MPEG4 files will go in this folder. Your formatted video files will/should be labeled like M4Vxxxxx.MP4. The “xxxxx” will be five numbers of yours or your converters choice.

MP_ROOT/101ANV01*

This is the folder that the PSP installs when you use the PSP to format your Memory Stick.

A few of the diff’rent video converters to you could use are:

  • PSP Video 9 (free) Good conversion tool for the PSP. It will also t’fer videos files with just a couple mouse clicks. Just make sure when you’re t’ferring AVC files the AVC folder is selected. Also make sure when t’ferring MPEG4 files you have the SP folder selected.
  • 3GP (free) Good conversion tool for the PSP. 3GP makes you t’fer the files yourself to the proper folder.
  • Sony PSP Media Manager ($19.95 download, $29.95 packaged) Good conversion tool for the PSP. PSP Media Manager knows to put AVC/MPEG4 into their respective folders.
  • Datel Max Media Manager ($14.99 in stores with USB cable)
  • PQDVD ($34.95)

There are MANY others available for you to use.

MUSIC

The MUSIC folder is where your music files go. In addition to the MUSIC folder itself you can have other folders in here as well, though only one folder deep.

The PSP supports the following formats: MP3, ATAC3plus, MP4, WAV and WMA (after online activation) files.

For thumbnails you can use MusicMatch, Media Tagger, SonicStage and/or whatever you want.

A few diff’rent audio rippers are:

  • Windows Media Player 9 and 10 (free part of the Windows OS). WMP9/10 works for ripping to MP3, just remember to change the default ripping to MP3 instead of WMA. If you choose to rip to WMA then make sure you uncheck the “copy protect music” option.
  • MusicMatch ($19.99) MusicMatch has great ripping/tagging features. You can rip your CDs and tag your current MP3s with the ID3 info you’ll need to display the proper song titles on your PSP.
  • iTunes 6 (free) I don't use iTunes at all. As I understand it, iTunes will rip your CDs to MP3/AAC. Since I don't use iTunes I can not offer help with it.

If you want your songs in a specific order you must have an M3U file. Your other option is to make sure your songs have a number preceding the file name. Example of the second option would be:

  • 01 Battery
  • 02 Master of Puppets
  • 03 The Thing That Should Not Be…

OMGAUDIO NOTE: I did not list this folder above this time. The reason is due to the fact that only SonicStage can move usable files here.

This folder comes from using SonicStage to t’fer audio files to the PSP. “SonicStage for Connect” is Sony’s music download service. SonicStage will t’fer music to your PSP to the OMGAUDIO folder. These files aren’t as universal as MP3 files and only play on select devices. Also these files can only be t’ferred back to the original computer that they came from. If you use SonicStage it will make its own various folders and files in here.

IF you do choose to use ATRAC3 files you’ll get better sound quality if you convert from CD instead of converting already compressed MP3 files.

Try these codes for free downloads using SonicStage for Connect.

CONNECTFAN = 5 songs
CONNECTME = 2 songs
CONNECT1 = 1 song

These codes worked for me when I originally posted this message. I have been told these free download codes do not work anymore or have expired.

PICTURE

The PHOTO folder is where your picture files will go.  Just like the MUSIC folder you can have additional folders in here as well. Remember it’s only one folder deep though.
The PSP supports the following formats: JPG, TIFF, GIF, PNG and BMP files.
PSP

Next we come to the PSP folder. This is where the bulk of the folders used with the PSP are housed.

PSP/COMMON

First is the COMMON folder. This is where the PSP defaults to save files not compatible with the PSP. This is where you can also save your homemade websites (aka portals) and its files.

PSP/GAME

This is the folder the PSP looks for DLed games. Right now it seems we only have game demos available. Sony has talked about downloadable PS1 games. This is prolly where they will be stored once Sony starts that service.

PSP/GAME/UPDATE

This of course is where the updates for the PSP firmware go.

PSP/MUSIC

The MUSIC folder is where your music files go. In addition to the MUSIC folder itself you can have other folders in here as well, though only one folder deep.

The PSP supports the following formats: MP3, ATAC3plus, MP4, WAV and WMA (after online activation) files.

PSP/PHOTO

The PHOTO folder is where your picture files will go.  Just like the MUSIC folder you can have additional folders in here as well. Remember it’s only one folder deep though.

The PSP supports the following formats: JPG, TIFF, GIF, PNG and BMP files.

PSP/SAVEDATA

This folder is where you’ll find your game saves.

PSP/SYSTEM

This folder holds your BROWSER and RSSCH folders.

PSP/SYSTEM/BROWSER

Your bookmarks and browser history are saved here.

PSP/SYSTEM/RSSCH

You’ll find RSS Channels you’ve subscribed to with your PSP here. You’ll see a CHANNELS folder in here once you start using the RSS Channel feature in the Network section of the XMB.

VIDEO

You can now put videos directly into this folder. This new folder allows for easy placement of videos downloaded from video RSS channels.

As SO many of you have wanted before... You can now make folders for videos and they'll show up in folders in the menu.

Not all videos will work from this VIDEO folder. Most MP4 (MPEG4) files will play. Now for the bad part... Most AVC (H.264) will NOT play. Also the thumbnail (THM) files do NOT work from the VIDEO folder. My advice is to continue using the MP_ROOT/xxxAVC01 folder for AVC (H.264) files.

* The folders DO NOT have to always be named the way they appear after a format from the PSP. They DO, however, have to follow the proper naming format:

  • The xxxMSDCF folder can be renamed with any three digit number you want to use. The PSP will still pick it up.
  • The xxxANV01, 101ANV01 and xxxMNV01 folders can also be renamed. Again these folders still need to follow the naming format. The first three numbers can be changed to any three digits you want to use. The “01” must, I repeat… THE “01” MUST STAY AS “01” FOR THE PSP TO SEE THE FOLDERS. This means that you can now organize/group your videos into specific folders. The PSP will read the folders in numerical order. You must change the folder names yourself. Also, once the folder names are changed PSP Video 9 will NOT see the folders anymore. Sony PSP Media Manager WILL see any ANV folders you have renamed.

This chart is intented to show people how the folders are arranged on the PSP and where certain files could/should be placed.

For other tutorials I would suggest looking at psp is incompatible's How to:RSS,music, photos, movies, locationfree TV and updates on your psp. Ver.2.71

Another guide I would suggest looking at is H2C Strong Bad's Media Guide for Newbies

If you plan on using my chart in your tutorial I request that you give me credit for the chart/image and that you please DO NOT shrink the picture in any way. When the picture gets shrinked some of the connecting lines tend to dissappear. Once they've dissappeared it's diff'cult to tell how the folders connect to one another.

Also if you link or use my chart somewhere else, please leave a post here with a link where you posted it.
