Fundamentals of Navigation for Adventure Racing

Introduction

This lesson will teach the basics of map and compass navigation. It is intended to help novice adventure racers get a feel for how races that require navigation work. Navigation isn't difficult, but it does require you to think, plan, and do some math.

This lesson covers:

• The tools you'll need to navigate.
• How to read a map.
• How to plot checkpoints on the map.
• How to use the compass.
• How to get where you want to go.
• A sample of how a typical adventure race would be setup.
• A map with coordinates and some grid plotters so you can practice plotting.
