Katie Update 01/14/01
Katie has come a long way and has improved dramatically. She is now going out into the back yard with the other collies and playing a little, climbing stairs, even trotting around a little when the other dogs play "keep away" with their toys. She has become very affectionate with our senior cats, since they are more her speed right now. She loves to cuddle on the rug and groom them. But she still spends about 20 hours a day on her pad on the couch. This is her "safe" place.
Katie is eating good nutritious food and vitamin supplements from Solid Gold and has gained 12 pounds. The terrible laceration on her right front leg did not require surgery and is almost a memory now ... only a tiny pink scar remains as you can see. There are only a few tiny scabs on her chest remaining after the terrible mange/staph infection that covered her in sores (the scabs were as large as my hands). Her skin is now a beautiful healthy pink and her sable coat is beginning to grow in. Her severe eye infection healed with no damage to her corneas, and the swelling in her feet has reduced by half (they are still quite tender).
I would like to thank everyone who has assisted us in caring for Katie. Dr. Gary Sartor and the staff at Animal Health Associates were the angels who cared for her while she was hospitalized. Rob Cary Pet Resort www.robcary.com donated over 100 pounds of Solid Gold food to Collie Rescue San Antonio along with vitamins and shampoos to help us with Katie and our other collies while caring for Katie. Solid Gold's pet foods and vitamins have made a big impact on Kate's recovery
Mostly, we would like the thank the HUNDREDS of strangers (now friends) around the world who stepped in to help Katie. We received emails from Canada, England, Norway, New Zealand, Australia, Germany and Mexico. We thank those who wrote, prayed, donated or sent packages for Katie. She had a WONDERFUL Christmas with MANY packages under the tree from her new friends around the world.
We will continue to post updates. Thanks to all who have cared for her. And for those who have made donations, I have GREAT news!! Katie received so many donations that a fund has been set up in her name at Collie Rescue San Antonio to assist other collies with urgent care needs. The "Katie Care Fund" will help us and other rescue groups save collies with urgent needs. Needs that go beyond normal vet care.
Please keep Katie in your prayers, she still has a long way to go ... but with the help of so many kind people, she will make it to a forever home. And the world will be a better place because of so many who cared for a little dog no one wanted.
