9th Bombardment Group (Heavy)
5th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy)
Organized as the 5th Aero Squadron on May 5, 1917; and subsequently redesignated 5th Squadron, 5th Observation Squadron, 5th Bombardment Squadron, 5th Bombardment Squadron (Medium), and 5th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), the 5th Bombardment Squadron was assigned to the 9th Observation Group (later 9th Bombardment Group) on February 15, 1929. The 5th Bombardment Squadron accompanied the 9th Bombardment Group. when the latter organization was transferred to the Panama Canal Department in September 1940. The 5th Squadron was initially stationed at Rio Hato, R. de P., and was moved to Beane Field, St. Lucia, on September 28, 1941, remaining there until the 9th Bombardment Group, less personnel and equipment, was transferred to Orlando, FL, on September 29, 1942. The personnel left in Trinidad by the 9th Group were absorbed by the 25th Bombardment Group.
