Who we are:

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateur radio operators nationwide who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.

Bexar County ARES is the local disaster communications group representing ARES in Bexar County, Texas and is led by the Emergency Coordinator (EC).

The only requirements for membership in this group are:
  • An FCC Technician class amateur license or higher
  • An interest in emergency communications
  • A willingness to serve the agencies supported by ARES in a selfless and professional manner
The possession of emergency-powered, portable and/or mobile VHF and HF communications equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership.

Membership in the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) is not a requirement for membership in ARES at the local level.

Residency in Bexar County is not a requirement, however amateurs who have active ARES groups in their home counties are encouraged to participate in their local program.

Bexar County ARES uses registration in the bexarcountyares Yahoo! group to replace ARES form FSD-98 (ARES Registration Form). By subscribing to the Yahoo! group, you are requesting membership in Bexar County ARES and agree to abide by the standards of conduct set forth by the EC. Please include your full name and call sign in the "Comments to Owner" section of the subscription request.

What we do:

When All Else Fails...Amateur Radio Bexar County ARES enables served agencies to utilize amateur radio as a backup communication system when primary means of communication (landline telephones, cellular phones, commercial or public safety radio systems) have failed. ARES members are trained in emergency and routine message handling, as well as tactical emergency communications.

Bexar County ARES can facilitate direct communication between served agencies which normally do not communicate with each other, providing instant interoperability, with local and long distance voice and digital capabilities, via amateur radio.

Bexar County ARES is not a first responder organization, nor does it have a direct role in disaster relief. Rather, it is called upon to support agencies which do have these roles, in order to provide a backup means of communication.

Skywarn In addition to disaster communications, Bexar County ARES has other specialized emergency communication roles, such as providing storm spotter reports for the National Weather Service's Skywarn program.
